Boyce Zone - 1 Ebr 2010

The show came about following an idea instigated by Max Boyce to see his songs translated into images and comprises of work from students of three Rhondda Cynon Taf comprehensive schools. Aberdare High School took their inspiration from The Ballad of Morgan the Moon, a tale about Old Mog the mechanic who built a rocket from a winding engine built in the Rhondda and powered by coal. Tonypandy Community College took their inspiration from Rhondda Grey where a child was asked to paint the Valley by Mrs Davies Art, and likened the colour to that found in the faces of miners. Students from Cardinal Newman School studied the work of an artist whose work was inspired by music. They then incorporated their ideas with Max Boyce’s lyrics of Duw It’s Hard to create abstract artworks for this project.

During the launch of the exhibition Max Boyce selected three pieces as his favourites and awarded prizes to the winners. First prize went to Leah Hughes, Kyle Povey and Gabrielle Shallish from Tonypandy Community College for their ceramic dish. Joint second prizes were awarded to Ryan Dunn from Aberdare High School and Gabrielle Shallish from Tonypandy Community College.

The exhibition is on display at Rhondda Heritage Park until 25 April. The Gallery is open 9am –4.30pm daily and admission is free. Visitors to the Gallery over the Easter holidays can take inspiration from Max Boyce’s songs to create their own unique artworks.
