Welsh Singer Prepares For Homecoming Show

The Pontypridd-born singer is making the visit from her New York home to celebrate the 21st Anniversary of the Rhydyfelin Credit Union and the 30th Anniversary of the Glyntaff Tenants and Residents Association.

She will perform at Hawthorn Leisure Centre on Friday May 14th and joining her in the concert will be Cor Meibion Pontypridd, the Richard Williams Singers and pupils from Hawthorn High School.

Iris Williams explained: "I am very excited about the concert in two weeks time and looking forward to hearing those fine choirs perform on stage. I’m sure this will be an evening to remember.

"The concert is a very special occasion for me because I have such a close connection to Pontypridd and Rhydyfelin, which is why I’m making the trip back home for the event. There is nothing better than a Welsh audience, so you can just imagine my excitement at the prospect of performing home again!"

Councillor Russell Roberts, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, said: "I would like to congratulate everyone at Glyntaff Tenants and Residents Association on reaching thirty years serving the people who live in the local area. Having a strong community spirit and a sense of looking out for each other is extremely important and helps to create a better place for all to live. Congratulations also to the Rhydyfelin Credit Union on reaching 21 years serving local residents."

Born in Pontypridd, Iris spent her first five years in a children’s home and various foster homes. Her professional career began when she recorded a Welsh version of Amazing Grace called "Pererin Wyf" before hitting the big time with the gold disc hit "He Was Beautiful".

During her career Iris was invited to perform at the Royal Variety Show and fourteen royal performances followed along with numerous awards and accolades.

Now based in New York, Iris is a regular guest on luxury cruise liners, and has worked closely with Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Jones and Bob Hope. She continues to devote a great deal of her time to charity. In 2004 Iris was awarded the OBE in the New Year’s Honours List.

"The Voice of Iris Williams" takes place at Hawthorn Leisure Centre on Friday May 14th 2010 Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Tickets, priced £10 and £8 (concessions) are available from Hawthorn Leisure Centre on 01443 843406 or the Box Office at the Muni Arts Centre on 01443 485934.
