Walk, Rest and Play in Rhondda Cynon Taf
In Rhondda Cynon Taf you can choose a leisurely stroll on a surfaced path by the river or an adventurous hike in the hills. You can join a led walk, follow a waymarked path or plan your own expedition.
Open access
The County has large areas of open access land, where you can wander at will. Open access land is marked on O.S. maps and details are available on the Countryside Council for Wales’ website. Open access land includes moorland, ffridd, commons and forests, often right up to the edge of town.
Forestry Commission Wales has a Visitor Centre at Garwnant, and car parks and picnic areas in various places, details from forestry commission website here.
Long distance walks
There are four long distance walks that pass through Rhondda Cynon Taf.
The Coed Morgannwg Way from Margam Park to Merthyr offers a challenging 36-mile walk in remote terrain, crossing the highest part of the county and Dare Valley Country Park, with dramatic long distance views.
In contrast, much of the Taff Trail (Cardiff to Merthyr) is a surfaced level path following former railways.
The Taff Ely Ridgeway Walk (21 miles from Mynydd Maendy in the West to Caerphilly Common in the East) follows the southern edge of the coalfield, with ups and downs, varied scenery and views and plenty of pubs! With plenty of car parks, bus and rail links close by it is ideal for short circular walks.
The Sea to Sky Walk is 16 miles from Dare Valley Country Park to Bryngarw Country Park
Short circular walks
The Loops and Links booklet (£16.99 from www.loopsandlinks.co.uk or local bookshops) contains 18 circular walks of varying length (12km to 72km) and challenge
A Walking Short Breaks booklet is also available which features five walks in rural Rhondda Cynon Taf. Walks include Aberdare, Treherbert, Llanharry & Brynna, Penderyn and Ynysybwl.
Bunny walks are a series of 6 walks in the Llantrisant area, set up by Taff Ely Ramblers, they are available to download or print off from their website
At Barry Sidings Countryside Park there is a circular walk that takes you through the park and up into the forestry land on the hillside. Leaflets are available from the visitor centre.
